Sanskrit correctly refers to punarnava extract (Latin name: Boerhaavia diffusa) as shothagni, which means "oedema reducer," as it is the first line of treatment in Ayurveda for whole-body oedema caused by a variety of factors. Punarnava, which means "the one that renews" in Ayurveda, is well renowned for its health-improving properties. It is one of the best herbs for balancing and revitalizing kapha, and most conventional treatments to reduce kapha contain it as a component. Punarnava is said to have a beneficial impact on blood diseases, vitiated kapha, and pitta dosha (body tumors).
