Description :

Thymus vulgaris, often known as common thyme, thyme, or garden thyme, is a species of flowering plant that is native to southern Europe from the western Mediterranean to southern Italy. It belongs to the mint family Lamiaceae. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and its bordering nations, as well as regions of Northern Africa and Asia. It is a bushy, woody-based evergreen subshrub that reaches heights of 15–30 cm (6–12 in) and widths of 40 cm (16 in). Its small, intensely scented, grey-green leaves and clusters of purple or pink flowers appear in the early summer. The primary source of thyme as a culinary component and herbal remedy is the herb Thymus vulgaris. It has a milder heat than oregano and a sweeter flavor than sage.

Thyme has been used for many years as a medicinal plant, culinary herb, and flavoring ingredient. According to legend, the thyme plant can be used as an infusion to treat digestive trouble, cough, diabetes, colds, and chest infections. Thyme contains antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal qualities in addition to acting as a soother for sore throats. It has been believed that Thymus vulgaris has astringent, anthelmintic, carminative, disinfectant, and tonic properties. The plant has been known to be quite helpful in cases of various intestinal illnesses and infestations, such as hookworms and ascarids, and it aids in the fight against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and Candida albicans.

The presence of its active component, thymol, which has been believed to be effective against enterobacteria and cocci bacteria, has been proven by scientific research. Thyme also has beneficial effects on the liver, appetite, laryngitis, and inflammation in addition to being effective in the treatment of bronchial and urinary infections. Thyme is said to cure bites and stings, neuralgia, and rheumatic aches and pains when applied topically to the skin. Athlete's foot can be treated with thyme essential oil, which can also be applied topically to relieve aching joints or rheumatic discomfort.
